There are a few reasons why these timing chains fail/stretch. The first is poor design and the second is lack of maintenance/ poor oil quality.
These engines according JLR only require an oil change every 2 years or 21,000 miles. This service interval is far to long and in that time the oil degrades. As a result components within the engine can excessively wear due to the poor oil quality.
Another factor of poor oil quality is oil dilution. This happens in all diesel engines that have a DPF (Diesel particulate filter). The diesel fuel is used to clean the DPF know as a DPF regeneration, as a result some of that fuel enters the oil used to lubricate the engine. Over time as the vehicle carries out DPF regenerations the oil becomes more diluted.
JLR have had issues with oil dilution on these engines, also using the vehicle for short journeys effects DPF regenerations and as a result increases oil dilution. So with long service intervals and high oil dilution the timing chains begin to wear and stretch.
You may start to notice some of these symptoms if your timing chain is beginning the wear/stretch.
A rattle from the engine on start up followed by a rattle when idling.
A rattle when revving the engine and in some cases can be heard when driving.
Engine management light illuminated on the dash.
Poor starting.

These engines have an upper and lower chain, and in some cases we have seen them snap causing major engine damage. In some cases the engine can be repaired but can cost significantly more due to more parts and labour required to repair the engine.

We have seen vehicles in the past that have had non genuine timing chain kits fitted. Unfortunately the quality is not as good and in some cases the kits don't have the latest modified parts. We have seen some non genuine chain kits last only a year before needing replacing again. That is why we only fit genuine timing chain parts as per the workshop manual to comply with the 24 month parts warranty.
Before we carry out any timing chain replacement we carry out some checks to the engine. We also check the oil dilution and the PCM (Powertrain control module for any software updates.
Once this is complete we replace the timing chains with genuine timing chain parts. We then carry out an oil and filter change and reset the oil dilution. If the PCM software requires updating we will advise the customer and update if required. Once complete the vehicle is given an extended road test and final checks complete.
We then advise customers to regularly replace the engine oil and filter, a minimum of 1 year or 10,000 miles to improve reliability and longevity.
